VISITING INDIAN POINT OR ÒTHE HOOKÓ

The INDIAN POINT NATURE PRESERVE is a partnership among the Indian Island Company (owners), the Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust (conservation easement holders and stewards), and the Town of Chebeague Island (road maintenance, speed regulation and designated parking.)

These three partners invite all visitors to this beautiful site to remember that Indian Point is a nature preserve, not a public beach.

The Hook is treasured by all on Chebeague but needs special care, especially during the busy summer months when so many wish to enjoy beach and bar. Please be guided by these reminders:

n  ÒWalk if you can, drive if you must.Ó  The access road should be used only to

deliver small children who cannot walk down or handicapped persons.

n  Please park in designated spaces along North Road. Parking below is limited

to five cars and intended for clammers and handicapped persons.

n  Please drive slowly (5 mph) on the access road; there are often children walking.

n  Please respect the privacy of the owners beyond the public access corridor

to the beach and intertidal bar and along the beach by the boathouse.

n  Please stay off the vulnerable dunes.

n  Please enjoy low impact use only:  ÒLeave only footprints; take only photographs.Ó

n  Please restrain dogs on the beach and bar from molesting migratory birds, especially during the migration season of late July and August.

A guide to Indian Point birds can be found in the Chebeague Island

Annual Newsletter, 1010-11 and also in a downloadable file at www.chebeague.org. A description of the easement can be found on the Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust website, www.ccltmaine.org.

Please join the partnership in preserving, experiencing and enjoying this unique natural area on Chebeague.
